Britain Improves Hospital Food

Have you ever had to stay in a hospital? The food is usually terrible! But on Tuesday, May 8, 2001, officials from the Department of Health in Britain announced a new plan for better food in hospitals. The plan was made by top chefs and will cost about 40 million.

Many people complain about the taste of hospital food, but Britain’s problem with the food was more serious than just the taste. Researchers found that patients in hospital throw away a lot of food each year. This is a big waste of money for the hospitals. It has also been found that 40% of people in a hospital are malnourished, meaning that they don’t get enough nutrients and vitamins. Researchers also know that one person out of every ten in a hospital would get better faster if the food were more nutritious.

So the Department of Health in Britain hired food experts, including famous chefs, nutritionists, dieticians, and restaurant critics. Together, this group of experts created and tasted new menus for Britain’s hospitals. Some of the meals are fancy and use exotic foods. Some of the more unusual ingredients on the menus include mung beans, cous cous, and leek. Other ingredients can be found on most dinner tables, like chicken, steak, and chocolate.

The final goal of the new meals was to create delicious tasting dishes that would also be healthy for patients in the hospital. By August 2001, the Department of Health expects hospitals to offer at least one of the new dishes to its patients. By the end of 2001, hospitals should have all the new meals on their menus.

...... End ......
