saraswati SARASWATI, the first goddess of the triad, is the goddess of knowledge, learning, the muses and the arts. In Aryan history, she is a river deity. The river Saraswati, which does not exist today, is reputed to meet the Ganga and the Yamuna rivers, which represent Parvati and Lakshmi respectively, at the confluence of the three rivers in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.

Saraswati is also worshipped as a purifier - an enricher of mankind. She is the consort of Brahma and the mother of all Vedic knowledge. Sculptures and paintings show her holding a musical instrument called the Veena, books of the Vedas, a rosary and a lotus. She reigns over the muses of the creative arts and is the inspiration of all those who seek knowledge. She is a serene deity dressed in white, seated on a white lotus and accompanied by a swan or  peacock.
The best known temple of Saraswati or Sharada, is in Sringeri, Karnataka.
